Artist Carol Law Conklin
Batik is an ancient method of painting on fabric with wax and dyes and I have brought it to modern times with my magical images of fantasy and farm.
I have been a batik artist for over 36 years and began doing batiks in the hills of Western Massachusetts where I also met my husband. Together we had a Jersey cow dairy farm near the Adirondacks in Upstate New York where I gathered many beautiful images and inspiration.
I have shown in galleries in Rockport, Provincetown and Leverett, Massachusetts; also a solo show at Ghent Gallery in Norfork, Virginia.

My work in pastels are a constant study in color, texture and the relationships of light and atmosphere. By capturing time and space in landscapes and still life, I create a sense of peace and serenity. In today’s fast pace world these qualities are hard to come by.
My landscape images are inspired by photographs of places that are special to me. I, in turn, wish to share that with the viewer.
The still life images are just that...still life. There is certain peaceful quietness in still life that engages the artist as well the viewer...a time to step out of the now and into a place which clears the mind and renews the spirit.
New to portraits of people, I am encouraged to continue my experience in rendering portraits of people, homes and animals in pastel, hoping to capture their emotional and personal nature in the traditional yet classic form.

Overall my work is about making opposites connect to create a poetic effect. I look for contrasts, both those inherent in the subject and those formal ones that occur in the process of composing a work. Although I carefully plan a composition I want media manipulation and expressive marks to push reality beyond the merely descriptive.

Each time you remember something you reinforce the memory but remove it one step further from the event. The imagination fills in details that you didn’t notice at the time. The mind glosses over bits deemed unimportant; the emotions that seemed so imperative at the time fade into obscurity. Sequences fall out of place and unrelated events collide to make an entirely new memory. Before you know it your “memory” is more daydream than chronicle.
It is in this meeting of real and imagined that I paint from. An idea or scene will strike me as needing to be reimagined: I pull a bit from here, add a bit there until I see what it should have been originally. I reshape smaller worlds into the better place that I remember.

Chester Creek Press is located just outside the hamlet of Chestertown in New York State’s Adirondack Park. The main focus of the press is publishing limited editions of contemporary works of prose and poetry. Most of the production work of each edition happens here in our studio – design, illustration, papermaking, letterpress printing from handset metal type, and bookbinding.
We also bring over thirty years of fine woodworking experience to the creation of bookbinding tools and tools for hand papermakers. We use the tools we make and we encorage feedback from our customers so our tools are refined and well tested.
The press offers summer and fall workshops in various aspects of the book arts, including introductory classes in bookbinding, papermaking, boxmaking, letterpress printing, and decorative paste-papers.
There are three studios at Chester Creek: bookbinding, letterpress printing, and boxmaking classes are taught in the print shop and bindery. Our equipment includes two Vandercook proof presses, a C&P Pilot platen press, over fifty cases of metal printing type, various hand bookbinding tools, and lots of handmade and fine art paper. We also expose and hand wash polymer plates in the print shop.
Downstairs from the print shop is the woodworking shop where we make specialized bookbinding tools and hand papermaking equipment as well as tools, jigs and fixtures for our other studios.
Out back is the paper mill where the hollander beater is kept along with vats, tubs, felts and blotters for making paper the traditional way, from cotton and linen rags.
Chester Creek Press is the imprint of Robert Walp.
